“Truth Thoughts”

“Truth Thoughts”

Any (honest) entrepreneur will probably admit that she started her business(s) as much out of her fears as her dreams, that the things she dreaded ended up being the very things that made her hustle so hard, and caused the business to live or die. Some people go into therapy, others hit the bar, entrepreneurs go into business. #samedifference (Actually, most entrepreneurs do it all at the same time: therapy, and then the bar, after a long day at your “office,” i.e. your messy kitchen table, in dirty sweats, pushing cats off the laptop, eating beans out of a can. Because yes, being an entrepreneur is just as glam as you imagined.)

All of that to say, when I received this completely unsolicited testimonial from an artist at my most recent NYPL “Entrepreneur Master Class for Artists,” on January 23rd, I was extremely moved. I created that workshop out of my own experiences, out of my own triumphs and failures, out of what had worked for me, and my clients. I created that workshop out of my belief that artists could be entrepreneurs, and just needed a helping nag hand, reminding them why it’s actually wonderful that they’re so weird, and that our lonely, plastic world desperately craves more organic, passionate weirdness.

Anyone who makes a comeback in their own life knows that a great deal of that comeback is learning to like yourself, to value yourself, learning to let your freak flag fly. So how amazing when, in our battered, frightened world, someone else can see your flying flag and feel themselves inspired…!

Here’s what D.K. said: ” Ms. Zimmerman is an incredibly exciting presenter. Rarely have we attended a seminar and returned with not one but two, what we would call “Truth thoughts.” The first is “Take yourself Seriously.” Really. If you don’t, who will? The second “Truth thought” is “Begin before you are Ready.” Ms. Zimmerman explained if you wait until you are quote unquote “READY”, nothing will happen. You will never be the ideal ready you have in your head. However, when you take even small steps on your journey each day you are becoming closer to turning that dream into a reality.”

It took countless small steps to get to a moment like this.
