You know those motivational posters, which show, for example, a scowling eagle and have the words “Leadership,” and then some cringe-inducing quote about leadership being like storming the beaches at Normandy? I found myself thinking of those cheesy yet fantastic posters, since I recently have begun reaping the rewards of having dramatically changed my attitude about some very important things. Tempting as it is to get the motivational poster for “Attitude,” and frame it in my bathroom, I shall not do so. [If you’re wondering what kind of freak would ever hang anything in her bathroom, a number of years ago I sublet a ramshackle apartment in the East Village, and my landlord hung all of his quite prestigious diplomas, his master’s degree, his Ph.D, in the bathroom. It gave his achievements quite a captive audience.]
It’s been that simple: change my attitude, reap the rewards. There have been incidents in my so-called life that for a while I may have been kind of bitter about. Kind of extremely cranky. And then when I finally refused to keep on making myself feel bad about poor choices I previously made….tah-dah! Things came together. In fact, things are coming together in a dramatic fashion. Weird, how that works, huh?
I mention this because a lot of people give a lot of lip service to how important it is to take risks and make mistakes…but then they need everything to work out perfectly. Okay, but taking a risk means: you have no idea what’s going to happen. You can do your research, you can prepare all you want but at a certain point, you have to leap. Otherwise, see, it’s not really a risk.
And failure is not necessarily the end. For many of us, it’s only the beginning. The end of the world is the end of the world. Until then, it might be the best thing that ever happened to you.
