31 Days 2 Get You Started! January 28: What are you so afraid of?

“But the most important verse is the one they wrote down in Montgomery, Alabama. They sang, ‘We are not afraid.'” -Pete Seeger

What are you so afraid of? Ask yourself that question, and think carefully about the answer. Write it down so you can see it in black and white.

Because whatever it is, it now owns you. You’re its bitch. Till you do the things inside of you, DESPITE your fear, your fear has won. You’re wasting so much (vital) time and energy and um YOUR LIFE when you could be doing all the amazing things inside of you. Alas, you’re wasting all of your potential because of that soul-destroying fear.  Just remember that each time you cheat YOURSELF out of doing all the things you could be doing…you’re making this choice. Think the people you admire weren’t (constantly) terrified? Don’t be so naive. The boys in WW2, storming the beach, fighting the Nazis…they were numb with fear. And they fought on. The Freedom Marchers were dry-mouthed with terror. And they marched on. The woman you went to college with, who now is a VP, was probably nauseous with fear when she was interviewing for that position. And she screwed up her courage and went, smiling, into that interview. The author who wrote the book that made you see the world differently…he was probably panicked and sweating when he submitted it, finally, to his agent. But he submitted his book anyway. What else is there to do? Give up? Give up on yourself?

Pete Seeger passed Monday, at the age of 94. What an exceptional man! How many millions of people did his music inspire? How many millions of people listened to his music, and got the courage to act, to concretely work, in ways big and small, for a better world? The world, and its benefits, that you and I enjoy today. Those people who marched? They were just like you and me, average people trying to do something above average and reap the benefits. The reason we venerate them is because they did not give in to their fear. You are bigger than the sum of your fears. Remember that.
