Picking up the pieces…

Picking up the pieces…

As a native New Yorker, as someone who grew up giggling at the tabloids,  and now, as a small business owner determined to make it HUGE*, I’m beyond THRILLED to have been interviewed for this NY Post article**: 4 reasons why getting fired rocks

Yes, I know: getting fired doesn’t exactly “rock,” but then again, it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. Nothing’s over until you give up. No matter how crappy you feel, you’re still in charge of your fate. You absolutely must believe that, you must believe that you can learn from your mistakes, and make better choices, and thus take back your life or else…oy.

Therefore if you got fired, I know, it feels like death, but no. Have your cry, have a drink or six, weep piteously, eat your weight in ice cream, and then start picking up the pieces, learning what you can from the experience. Choose to move forward. There is no alternative.

When I was fired from my first job in Moscow, I wept on my boyfriend’s shoulder as if the world had ended, wept hysterically, and then, eventually, stopped drinking vodka straight from the bottle, started using a glass (…fancy!) and started applying for a new job. I eventually fell into a job as assignment editor at NBC News‘ Moscow Bureau. I can honestly say that being fired was the best thing that ever happened to me. It brought me a whole new career of having phones thrown at me by furious reporters opportunities, challenging my previous limitations.

*…what’s the point, otherwise?

**Okay, okay, so you’re right: my piece has nothing on this (in)famous article…
