Fashion Sense & Sensibility

Okay, yes, I’ll admit it–I’ve admitted much worse stuff on this site, after all–I read the Soft Surroundings (www.softsurroundings.com) catalog, and sometimes I even find pieces I consider ordering, though I usually don’t, since the people behind this brand are seemingly obsessed with tunics, and I’m short,5’6″, so tunics don’t work for me. But this morning, leafing through the catalog, I noticed this item: http://www.softsurroundings.com/P/Label_Noir_Bedouin_Oasis_Jacket/

Oh my. I looked at this coat, and thought, “This is one of those items of clothing that was really made only to be viewed in the pages of a catalog. In real life, this coat would never not work.” In real life, this coat would make the average woman look like she had participated in an especially unfortunate revival of Godspell. Otherwise, the only women who could pull it off would be about 19,  and would, in all likelihood, be seriously high at  Coachella. Now that I think about it, I’m sure there are some fierce drag queens who could wear  the sh*t out of that coat, but for the rest of us, clothing like that was really created to be featured in magazines.

So, instead of getting irritated, I was amused. Because it would be a huge mistake to waste my time getting irritated with the designers of clothing like this, or irritated with myself and think, “Well if I had a better body I could wear that coat.”  I have no interest or time to spare to follow that dangerous thought down a dangerous road of fixing myself to fit other people’s ideals. Barf. Oh, it’s so much work to fix yourself to impress people who don’t care, who simply want your money and know that the easiest way to get it, is to go through your fears and insecurities. That really makes my grumpy inner teenager want to barf. Life’s too short to make yourself miserable.

I certainly don’t mean to single out Soft Surroundings since I really enjoy their catalogs, but maybe that’s the point: life would be a lot better if we had more fun, and treated things like this as opportunities to enjoy ourselves, instead of beating ourselves up. Life’s short, play hard.
