Monday’s motivation.

Monday’s motivation.

Despite everything, it’s Monday. Again. And if you’re watching all of your intricately-crafted plans for changing your life go up in the smoke of fear and resignation…well, not so fast. One of the many things I have learned from doing this business, is that to succeed at difficult things, you sort of have to trick yourself. You have to trick the part of yourself that is looking for an excuse. So, if you were hoping to make this the week that you get your job hunt back on track…or finish the first chapter of the book you’ve been talking about for twenty years…or attend that networking event, but you’re already feeling depressed and hopeless….simma down.

You could decide that since it’s Monday and you’ve already flunked your to-do list, you might as well give up. Or you can do whatever it is you’re able to do today, right now, for 15 minutes and seize victory back from the sticky hands of defeat. You can beat yourself up for not being perfect, or you can forgive yourself and do something today and try again tomorrow. Don’t worry about what other people think, or do. Comparing yourself to others is the quickest way to feel terrible. Just promise yourself that you’re going to do something today.

That way, this Sunday, you’ll be able to look back on a week in which hey, you actually ended up getting some good work done. Not too shabby. That’ll also probably make you feel better about yourself generally, which will  improve your mood, which will allow you to do even more next week. Or else, you can give up now and spend Sunday wallowing in your self-loathing. Dear god. Me, I lived in Moscow, Russia and worked in TV news and attended law school so I’ve personally had enough of putting myself in miserable situations. I’m over that. I hope you are as well.
