Networking tips. (No, it never ends.)

Living in NYC, I have a lot of clients who are foreigners, and/or speak a number of languages. The ability to speak more than one language is a wonderful way to positively differentiate yourself as you position yourself to succeed in a very tough economy.  The key, however, is to appreciate that all languages are important. Don’t decide that you “only” speak Greek or that “no one cares” about Tagalog. Those sentiments express far more about you, than they say anything valid about the languages in question.

Let’s say you’re job hunting and you speak fluent German. If you were my client, I’d want you to mention that on your LinkedIn profile, in the summary section, as well as on your resume. (If you don’t mention it, no one will know.) Then, I’d ask you to get on the email list for the German consulate, so that you can start attending whatever events are open to the public. Get some crisp business cards and start schmoozing! Foreign communities are a huge pool of professional and personal opportunities; these people have an emotional connection with you–the German language–and they will be more inclined to recognize the value of your bilingualism and to be seeking candidates with your abilities.

You should also search out German-run businesses and communities in your area. When you’re looking for a job, you want to highlight every aspect of your life and experience that (positively) differentiates you. If you speak another language, and you’re not promoting that, you’re missing out on potentially huge opportunities.
