New Year’s Resolutions That Actually Work

New Year’s Resolutions That Actually Work

“Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.”-Kierkegaard

This is the last weekend of 2013, and I know that right about now a lot of people are making their 2014 New Year’s Resolutions. Bueno. If you want to actually achieve any of those goals, I hope some of those resolutions will be to understand yourself and the choices you make, as well as understanding the conditioning that leads you to make those choices. (The decision to like yourself is always a helpful resolution to make, by the way. #justsayin’)

If you choose to ignore who you really are, and what kind of choices you make, and, crucially, why, you can end up resolving (AGAIN) to spend 2014 getting up at 5am, in order to hit the gym for a minimum of an hour a day and lose 15 pounds by February 1, 2014. Which is great…until it’s January 1, 2014 and you “remember” that you’re not a morning person, you’ve never been a morning person, in fact morning people make you want to vomit, and just the thought of going to the gym, makes you want to stress-devour a jar of Nutella, and suddenly it’s January 12th and you haven’t even walked by your gym once, and instead, you’ve actually gained 20 pounds. And suddenly the soundtrack in your brain kicks in. You know the one I’m talking about: the one that tells you you’re a loser, a mess, that you’re pathetic; the soundtrack that never skips a chance to remind you that you’re unlovable, hideous and destined to die alone. But making macro choices that completely go against your true personality, you’ve made the part of yourself that hates you very happy…but why do that? There’s enough people out there who will gleefully humiliate you. Why help them?

Instead, why not resolve to take a healthy cooking class with friends and have more fun? Don’t like the gym? Go for a walk, ride a bike, or get some free-weights and work out at home at a time that suits your interior clock. My point being that you can make resolutions and wait for 2014, or you can stop waiting and take action today.

You know me, I’m a big fan of action–oh, get your mind out of the gutter–so if you’d like some help getting started on doing something great for yourself, I salute you!
