The Art & Ambition of Social Media

“To create one’s world in any of the arts, takes courage.”- Georgia O’Keeffe

Terrifyingly enough, we here in the YentaBunker are already girding our loins for 2015, and on January 16, I’ll be offering, in conjunction with the Queens Council on the Arts, The Art & Ambition of Social Media. If you’re an artist who uses social media but you’re not really sure what you’re doing, or how it’s supposed to help you…if you’ve ever heard yourself whining saying, “Ugh, I hate Twitter; I don’t understand it!”…or “I hate to promote myself, that’s just like gross!”…if you’re sick of being broke, and not getting the opportunities you know your work deserves…you need to spend $10 to get your mind right, Son. If you’re putting off using Twitter or Facebook or Pinterest–and thus, by extension, putting off reaping any of the benefits–because you don’t know what to do and you find it overwhelming or tedious, okay, break my heart be like that, but just consider: isn’t your art worth your best? Isn’t your art more important than your fears?

“I’ve been absolutely terrified every moment of my life, and I’ve never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do.”- Georgia O’Keeffe

I’ll be covering everything from how social media can help you define your voice, to identifying the correct platforms for your voice, and goals, to how and why artists should be masters of personal branding, to getting started creating an on-line presence appropriate to your unique brand. We’ll cover everything from creating a professional Facebook page, or Twitter account, to using your Google+ profile as a starter website. Participants will leave with a personalized strategy to get started on social media. In a nutshell: lots of encouragement, and realistic strategies, with only the bare minimum of nagging. (Maybe.)

This is my second workshop on this subject, and it evolved out of this article I wrote for Huffington PostHow Artists Can Use Social Media to Discover and Promote Their Voice

Anyhoo, (as my mother always says), if you’re an artist and can get to Queens, or you know and love an artist who can get to Queens: what are you waiting for? #gettowork
