TUESDAY TIPS: June 17, 2014: Keep it simple

“Wow, you really don’t like yourself,” is what I frequently think when a client, or potential client, or random human, tells me of some insanely complicated–and thus, destined to fail–plan to “better” their lives. Some plan that is supposed to magically change their lives…except that the plan in question is so over-the-top and unrealistic that it would given even Yahwah pause.

Listen, you’re trying to change your life, and that is damn hard. The world itself is damn discouraging. Even doing something fairly straightforward can feel like putting a knife into your own heart. Therefore, putting all your (fragile) hopes onto doing something half-assed, or thinking, that after years of defeat and failure, a highly unrealistic plan is seriously going to succeed…come on, you know better. The good part of you is right to be suspicious, because this “plan” was hatched by the part of you that was brutalized and conditioned by the people who didn’t like you, or didn’t like themselves, and wanted to keep you submerged with them. This bad part of yourself is setting you up to fail so that you’ll be free from having to commit to your dreams. Don’t let that happen. You already know how miserable that kind of existence is.

If you’re trying to make changes, I salute you. Now help yourself to succeed by keeping things as simple and realistic as possible. Break it down into bite-sized steps, so you can work your up to your goals. Crazy as it seems, I’d actually like to see you achieve your dreams, so let’s keep it basic. Do what you can today, be patient with yourself and try again tomorrow. Don’t think, right now, of your goals since they will, necessarily, be overwhelming. Think of all the steps en route to your goal and set an egg timer for 15 minutes, and commit 15 minutes of your day to getting started. You have to get started to finish, right? Less worrying, more doing.
