31 Days 2 Get You Started! January 20: Make room in your life for success.

First and foremost, yes, despite all my nagging encouraging you to commit, I indeed did NOT post yesterday, but before you start cackling with glee…calm yourself. I’m having connectivity issues in my area, so irritating as it is, I’m going to remind you to do what I say, not (always) what I do, since otherwise, you’d also listen to too much Pitbull and be covered in cat hair. Anyhoo.

If you’re trying to change your life, you have to create room in your life for that change. Years ago, at the very baby steps of this business, I was kinda sorta maybe thinking about committing to this coaching business, and also bartending. Which means, I spent a lot of time making drinks and talking about how “one day,” I was going to have this awesome business. And then I’d go make someone a Sex on the Beach or some other abomination. For me, the breakthrough came when I realize that this business was never going to just “happen,” I was going to have to make it happen. I had to stop bartending so I could focus on understanding how business gets done. And how to rent an office in NYC, and all the other million details that go into the glam world of small business. #snort

So if you’re trying to, for example, become a professional actress or make-up artist, or writer, you must start focusing on your goals TODAY–it’ll never get easier, btw–and cut all the extraneous fat away of activities that are probably wasting your time and sapping your energy.  I could have either been a bartender or become obsessed with this business, but not both. Your lifestyle is probably going to have to suffer so you can focus.

For me, once I understood that I was wasting my own time, I chose to be broke in the immediate so that I could make this business work in the long-term. I used to work with a lot of waiter/actors who would work their tails off to make money, making sometimes $300 or $400 in a shift…and then they’d go out drinking, and blow half of that by dawn. Which is a huge waste of time and energies. That drove me crazy.

Ask yourself if you’re spending so much time on your day job, that you don’t have the time/energy/interest to devote to your passion. Identify your goals and see if there is one goal that when achieved will start giving you the time, resources and confidence to attack all of your other goals. A big part of making room in your life for success is believing that yes you damn well can achieve your dreams…and that you deserve to achieve those dreams.
