All grown up

All grown up

Oh, come on, of course I cannot sew, please, I can barely cook. I always end up dating men who cook for me, partly because they’re good men and they want to take care of me, but also they really don’t want to eat my cooking. Like, I’ll offer to make dinner and they’ll roar with laughter and say, “No.”

Even the cats prefer take-out and Cheetos to my cooking. In my defense, Your Honor,  I grew up in NYC, where there are people who specialize in taking in designer jeans–and btw, if you’re looking for a great tailor, email me, I know an amazing woman in the East Village–and where you can order a full-course Tibetan meal at 1:00 am, so why would I bother to learn the domestic arts? (In hindsight, of course, that’s totally my loss, and now when I’m able to sew a button back on my coat, I feel as if I’m accomplished something significant…alas.)

Luckily, the other part of growing up in NYC–one of the good parts!–is meeting many interesting, different people, like my friend, Marie Segares whom I’ve known since the late 1980s, when we were both in high school together in Brooklyn Heights. Now she’s all grown up, and a crochet and knitting blogger, designer and teacher, plus an all-around solopreneur,  plus, she just launched a podcast (Creative Yarn Entrepreneur)…oh, and she and her boyfriend also rescue cats!  She’s good people. I’m lucky to know her, and also lucky that she put up with me spending a great deal of our high school years singing “Maria” to her from “West Side Story.” (“Carlota, you seem like you were rather obnoxious when you were in high school?” *giggles, tosses hair* “Oh stop…!”)

Anyhoo, she recently asked me to model one of her latest designs so here’s a link to her blog: Free Pattern: A Little Bit of Bling Shawl
