31 Days 2 Get You Started! January 29: “I’m glad that I’ve kept at it.”

“I’ve been working on my headstand. I wanted to do it by my 40th birthday. Then I pushed the deadline to New Year’s Day. It took a few weeks longer than that, but finally, I can say I can do a headstand without a wall or helper. I still wobble and I can’t stay up the full five minutes my favorite yoga teacher commands us to “go upside down”. I also sweat big drops onto my mat the whole time- not from exertion, but fear. But now I can truly recommend setting a goal to do something that scares you, that makes you sweat, whether you’re 40, or 20, or 80. Set a timeline- then be kind to yourself and extend it, then extend it again- but keep working towards the goal, even if it’s scary. I know a lot of people can flip right into headstand or do handstands and that there are truly scary, death-defying things people I know do-like sky diving or having 3 or more kids – but for me it’s headstand- and I’m glad that I’ve kept at it.”

From a friend’s Facebook page. I take NO credit whatsoever for her accomplishment–if you know me, you know I don’t do yoga. I go to the gym to lift weights and be left alone. No surprises there for a Type-A personality!– but I felt that everything she said was too important not to share. Now, I’m just wondering what she’ll do next… And, of course, what you will do once you commit to a goal and “then be kind to yourself and extend it, then extend it again- but keep working towards the goal, even if it’s scary?” #truth
